Why Choose the Liberal Arts?
Start Date: 10/1/2012Start Time: 5:00 PM
End Date: 10/1/2012End Time: 6:30 PM

Event Description
Professor Mark Roche, author of the award-winning book Why Choose the Liberal Arts (Notre Dame, 2010), will speak in the Nott on 1 October at 5:30. Roche will make an important and challenging case for the unity of the practical, intrinsic, and idealist values of the liberal arts. Put simply, Roche argues that it’s a false choice if we think we have to choose between practical skills, studying broadly in many subjects, and the opportunity to ask big questions about life: the liberal arts integrate all those things whatever our primary or narrow interest may be. No one interested in defending and championing education should miss this event. Mark Roche is the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Professor of German Language and Literature and Concurrent Professor of Philosophy at Notre Dame.
